Youll also look for words like similarities and differences. These words make it easy to recognize that you are going to be writing a compare and contrast essay. Movie Analysis Hotel Rwanda - 1519 Words
The based on a true story trademark of the film Hotel Rwanda has implications for genocidal memory, post genocidal peace and reconciliation, and the promotion of heroism amid the udder chaos that engulfed the country. The film ultimately illustrates an oversimplified, ideologically driven version of the 1994 massacre. It emphasizes the role of a Hollywood hero, rather than the deeply rooted and complex factors at the center of the violence, leading to popular opinion of the Hutu population as barbaric and uncivilized and the Tutsi as innocent liberators. The film is historically accurate with respect to its representation of the physical similarities between both populations, as well as its depiction of the Hutu and Tutsi living in harmony prior to the assassination of the Rwandan president. Despite these accuracies, Hotel Rwanda fails to capture the true matrix of economic, political and historical mechanisms capable of motivating acts of violence of this stature. Furthermore, the f ilm utterly discounts the role played by Belgian imperialism in transforming the societal makeup of Rwanda. Instead the film maintains a violent aesthetic, emphasizing the brutality of the conflict in order to appeal to a wider audience. The company also moved away from other companies who relied upon distributors to sell their bikes when the company set up its headquarters in the west coast of America. The BCG found that the motorcycles available before Honda entered the market were for limited group of people such as the police, army etc. But Honda had a ââ¬Å"policy of selling, not primarily to confirmed motorcyclists but rather to members of the general public who had never before given a second thought to a motorcycleâ⬠( SP p. 16 ). The small, lightweight Honda Supercub sold at under 250 dollars compared to the bigger American or British machines which were retailing at around 1000 to 1500 dollars. In 1960 Hondaââ¬â¢s research team comprised of around 700 designer and engineer staff compared to the 100 or so employed by their competitors showing the value which the company placed on innovation. Production per man-year was 159 units in 1962, a figure not reached by Harley-Davidson Honda was following a strategy of developing region by region. Over a period of four to five years they moved from the west coast of America o the east coast. The report uggests that there was a smooth entry into the U. S market which led to an instant success. Pascale argues that Honda entered the American market at the end of the motorcycle trade season showing their impotence to carry out research in the new market. As they entered the market at the wrong time sales were not as good as they should have been and any success was not going to be instantaneous. Pascale also criticises the assumption that Honda was superior to other competitors in productivity. He says that Honda was successful in Japan with productivity but circumstances indicate that the company was not superior. The lack of funding from the ministry of finance and the ploughing back of profits into inventory meant they had a tight budget to follow. The BCG report shows that Honda had a smooth policy of developing region by region, moving from the west to the east. Pascale response is that this is partly true but reminds that Hondas advertising was still in Los Angeles in 1963, four years after setting up their subsidiary. The report to the British government showed that Honda had a deliberate strategy of disassociating themselves from the hells angels type of people by following the nicest people advertisement policy. Was World War 2 A Conitnuation Of World War 1? One could make the argument that World War II was just a continuation of World War I, despite the fact a very late one. Approximately twenty years separated the two but the effects of World War I unquestionably contributed to the starting of World War II such as the Treaty of Versailles and the search for thorough ideas (Fascism and communism) due to the terrible conditions of different countries after the Great War. Publically however, the two wars are considered separate conflicts. On the other hand, it could be argued that, unless you exterminate everyone on one side, the end of a war always leaves "unfinished business" that are the seeds of the next war. World War I was based on imperialism, militarism, and nationalism. The war took place in Europe as its battle grounds. It started with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in the year 1914 during his travels to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. Bosnia was in the very south-east corner of the Austrian empire and some people there wanted to be independent from Austria and set up their own state which could run itself. Franz Ferdinand had been warned that his visit could provoke trouble but he ignored this advice and visited Sarajevo regardless. As was common at the time, he travelled in an open topped car. Exactly one month following the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The war divided Europe into two armed camps - on one side was the Triple Alliance made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, and their enemy was the Triple Entente of France, Russia and Great Britain. As other countries began to join sides, the Triple Alliance became kno wn as the Central Powers and the Triple Entente became the Allied Forces. The United States attempted to remain neutral and was a proponent for the rights of neutral states. Isolationist foreign policy was encouraged by Congress's apprehensions about giving other countries a political door into US policies and the cultural melting pot of the United States' population. In spite of these factors, the United States did enter World War I, as a result of several events. In 1917 upon the participation of The United States, with nearly one million troops in the line by the end of the war, the American presence finally convinced the Germans that the war could not be won; they had managed to win a war of attrition with France and Britain, but the influx of an endless supply of American troops meant that there was no way Germany could win. By November 1918, the writing was on the wall and on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent along the entire line as an armistice was signed, signaling the end of the war. In January President Wilson traveled to Paris for the peace conference that would lead to the Treaty of Versailles, he came equipped with his Fourteen Points, an idealistic plan to reorder Europe with the United States as a model for the rest of the world. He failed to gain most of what he wanted as the French and British were more inclined towards a vengeful peace, requiring reimbursements from Germany, than to any idealistic requests of the United States. The League of Nations, the one victory Wilson managed at the conference, was never backed by the United States Senate, and, without the United States, it failed as a powerless organization that collapsed in the face of German and Japanese aggression in the 1930s. By the end of World War 1, ended the four major imperial powers -The German, Austro-Hungarian, Russia and Ottoman empires. The German and Russian empires lost a substantial amount of land and territories, while the other two were pulled apart. German Exercise on Wann, Wenn and Als When is not necessarily an easy translation in German. There are three words you need to know to express different English variations of when. They are wann, wenn, and als.à A Quick Lesson On Als In German Als means as, when or then, depending on its context. Its the when translation that stumps most German learners. One way to remember it:à alsà refers to when in the past, whereasà wennà (more on that below) refers to when in the future or hypothetically.à When in the past: I should have bought bread when I went to the store. When in the future: When I graduate culinary school, I will make my own bread. Alsà can be used when you assign a role to something, like as a child. This scenario happened over 2.9 million times through August, 1998. Airbags significantly reduce the risk of being killed in a crash. The risk of being killed, if you have your seatbelt on, is reduced by 26% and 32% if you donââ¬â¢t have a belt on and the airbag goes off. Airbags also reduce the risk of serious head injuries by 75% if used with a shoulder and lap belt. à à à à à Yes, airbags save lives, but they have also been known to seriously hurt or kill people, especially children. Since 1990, about 113 deaths have been caused by airbags inflating in not serious accidents. 51 of these deaths were children, most of whom were not using a seat belt. Small children and airbags donââ¬â¢t mix. Children shouldnââ¬â¢t be in the front seat because the force of the airbag is usually too much for them. Never put a rear facing child seat in the front seat of the car. If the airbag goes off, the seat will be pushed forward and the child may get squeezed between the back of the seat and the airbag. Children are less likely to be killed in a crash if they are in the back seat. à à à à à If someone must put a child in the front seat, they may want to have an on/off switch for the airbag installed on the passenger side. On/off switches are used to prevent the airbag from going off in an accident, but they arenââ¬â¢t recommended for most people. You only need an airbag switch on the driverââ¬â¢s side if your legs are too short to reach the pedals and have your torso 10 inches away from the steering wheel. Passenger side switches should only be used if you always have to have a small child or infant sit in the front seat because they have a medical problem and need to be watched constantly. French English Relations in Canadian History Essay
Throughout the 20th Century in Canada there have been large amounts of tension and hostility between two of the largest ethnic groups, French and English Canadians. Both groups have attempted to gain the upper hand in battles over politics, language, religion, and culture. It is unfortunate that this bitter battle between Canadians is still taking place today. It is worth noting that the French make up 24% of Canadaââ¬â¢s population, about 6. 5 million, 6. 2 million are living in Quebec. The three main historical events that have pushed relationships between French and English Canadians to the breaking point that ultimately led to violence and the threat of separation are the Manitoba School Question, Conscription in World War I, and the October Crisis. The Manitoba Schools Question began in 1890 with the abolishment of public funding to Catholic Schools, and ended with the Laurier-Greenway compromise in late 1896. ââ¬Å"The 1870 Manitoba Act established a dual system of Protestant and Roman Catholic Schoolsâ⬠(Crunican, Paul E. Pg. 1). This meant that The Board of Education used public funding for both Protestant and Catholic Schools. In later years the French Roman Catholic population decreased rapidly as the English Protestant population increased, and became a large majority in Manitoba. Liberal Premier of Manitoba, Tomas Greenway abolished the Board of Education and public funding to Catholic schools in 1890 and erected a Department of Education under ministerial leadership. ââ¬Å"Two Privy Council decisions, 1892 and early 1895, upheld the validity of the Manitoba law but affirmed the federal governmentââ¬â¢s power to restore the lost school privilegesâ⬠(Crunican, Paul E.à Pg 1). The Federal election of 1896 was fought primarily on the issue of the Manitoba School Question and was won by Liberal leader Wilfred Laurier. He promised less abrasive and more effective ââ¬Å"sunny waysâ⬠to approach the province. ââ¬Å"The Laurier-Greenway Compromise of late 1896, promoting an amendment to the Schools Act in 1897, did not restore separate schools, but it did allow Catholic teachers to be employed in certain circumstances and it did give some religious-instruction privileges within public schoolsâ⬠(Crunican, Paul E.à Pg 1). This ended the Manitoba Schools Question and was a large cause of tension between both French and English Canadians. To this day it is seen as Canadaââ¬â¢s most significant loss of French and Catholic rights outside of the province of Quebec. During World War I Canada contributed to the war effort by supplying ammunitions, war vehicles, and soldiers. Many French Canadians did not concern themselves with the war since Prime Minister Robert Borden had promised there would be no conscription. Three years into the war after the Battle of the Somme the number of casualties started to mount up and number of new recruits dwindled. ââ¬Å"On May 18, 1917, Prime Minister Borden rescinded his earlier promise and introduced the Military Service Act, a conscription bill that would require all males between the ages of twenty and thirty-five be draftedâ⬠(Conscription Crisis of Canada 1917 pg 1). Citizens in Quebec were outraged as well as Henri Bourassa a well known French Canadian politician who actively opposed anything but voluntary service into the Canadian army. In an already fragile nation many believed this would tear the country in two and cause irreparable damage. The bill became law on August 29, 1917; it was met with two days of rioting and violence on the streets on Montreal. This left one citizen dead and dozens more wounded. ââ¬Å"The worst incident occurred during Easter weekend in 1918â⬠(Conscription Crisis of Canada 1917 pg 2). It broke out when a French Canadian young man failed to produce his conscription exemption papers to police. The riots were extremely violent and over 6,000 English speaking soldiers were deployed to Quebec, still the riots caused important destruction of property and resulted in over 150 civilian and military casualtiesâ⬠(Auger, Martin F. Pg 1). Despite conscription there was no significant increase in the number of troops in the Canadian army. The main reason for this was that many exemptions were being made on the grounds of religious and personal beliefs as well as men holding essential jobs. This further distanced Quebec from the rest of Canada and ushered in political efforts to try and separate the province and establish an independent state of Quebec. The October Crisis of 1970 again was the cause of major tensions and violence between French and English Canadians. Leading up to the October Crisis was the Quiet Revolution (1960) in Quebec. It had a profound effect on Quebec and helped to create Provincial funded education, healthcare, and a pension plan. There was also an emergence of minority movements such as gay rights, feminism, environmental awareness, public sector unions, and aboriginal rights. Some Quebec nationalists, however, eschewed the political movement and favoured a radical course of actionâ⬠(Clement, Dominique pg1). The Front de liberation du Quebec (FLQ) terrorist organization emerged. The FLQ attempted to gain Quebec independence from the rest of Canada through violent acts of terrorism. ââ¬Å"The conflict between the police and the FLQ, and the radicalism of the 1960s, set the context for the October Crisisâ⬠(Clement, Dominique pg 3). The FLQââ¬â¢s attacks reached its climax on October 5, 1970 when they kidnapped James Cross a member of the British consulate in Montreal. One of the largest manhunts in Canadian history was organized, police conducted raids, arrests, and questionings. When the government refused to comply with the FLQââ¬â¢s demands Pierre Laporte the provincial minister of labour was kidnapped. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau reacted by enacting the War Measures Act which relieved all Canadian citizens of their civil rights. ââ¬Å"The next day, Pierre Laporte was found in the trunk of his car, murdered by the FLQâ⬠(Clement, Dominique pg 5). Many Quebeckers were outraged by the governmentââ¬â¢s choice and the number of federal troops called into Quebec, while many outside Quebec supported the governmentââ¬â¢s decision. Around 500 civilians were arrested without warrant that had connections with Quebec nationalism, and anger and bitterness remains with them as they were wrongfully persecuted and oppressed. The crisis lasted around two months. ââ¬Å"Cross was released on 3 December and his kidnappers were flown to Cuba, while Laporteââ¬â¢s killers were captured on 27 December and sent to jailâ⬠(Clement, Dominique pg 9). The October Crisis was Canadaââ¬â¢s most heinous acts of terrorism and was critical to the degrading relationships between French and English Canadians. The 20th century is filled with conflicts between both French and English Canadianââ¬â¢s. The three key events that drove them apart were the Manitoba School Question, World War I Conscription, and the October Crisis. The most defining moment in history being the October Crisis. The extent to which was taken by the FLQ as well as the government continues to be remembered by Canadians and remains a sensitive topic for many. Whether or not this event will be the catalyst for future violence and the separation of Quebec is not known. But Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier understood the sensitive dynamic between French and English Canadian and continued to hope for a better future which is expressed in this quote ââ¬Å"Two races share today the soil of Canadaâ⬠¦. These people had not always been friends. But I hasten to say itâ⬠¦. There is no longer any family here but the human family. It matters not the language people speak, or the altars at which they kneelâ⬠(Laurier, Wilfrid).

While he illustrates royal consciousness in terms of Solomonââ¬â¢s reign of the Hebrew kingdom from 966 to 922 B.C., the main structure of royal consciousness can be seen and criticized in almost every culture.
